چکیده

The fields of molecular genetics and molecular biology are of increasing interest in medicine and science. The aim of this article is to describe the current status of genetics in sports, with a special focus on genetic polymorphisms and endurance performance. Results from twin studies suggested a high percentage of heritability for endurance performance and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Data from large sample sizes of monozygotic and dizygotic twins showed heritability values up to 40% for adjusted VO2max values. Today we are able to use molecular markers to look for specific genes and their implications for phenotypes of interest. The first results for endurance-related phenotypes are available now. Till now we have evidence for association between different types of endurance measures and polymorphisms in the genes encoding the Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme (ACE), the muscle type Creatine-Kinase (CKMM), and the alpha-2a-adrenoceptor (ADRA2A) gene. The scientific focus in the next years will mainly involve case-control studies and genome analysis with informative markers in known and unknown genes (regions) of interest.

Association between PGC-1α gene variations and physical performance in non-athletic boys

Introduction: PGC-1α gene plays an important role in regulating cellular energy metabolism and stimulating the increased cell mitochondrial mass. Understanding the status of this gene polymorphism in non-athletic male adolescents may be helpful in choosing and identifying the sport talented male adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to investigate possible association between PGC-1α...

ارتباط بین پلی‌مورفیسم ژن IL6 و ورزش توانی: یک مرور سیستماتیک و متاآنالیز

Background: In the last few years several polymorphisms variants with significant association to power and sprint performance of elite athletes have been verified. Meantime, the IL-6 gene was introduced as a proper candidate to imply a person alteration into an elite athlete. Therefore, the goal of the present study is to examine the association between IL6 gene polymorphism and power sport usi...

Effective utilization of genetic information for athletes and coaches: focus on ACTN3 R577X polymorphism

Training variants (type, intensity, and duration of exercise) can be selected according to individual aims and fitness assessment. Recently, various methods of resistance and endurance training have been used for muscle hypertrophy and VO2max improvement. Although several genetic variants are associated with elite athletic performance and muscle phenotypes, genetic background has not been used ...

Investigation of the Relationship Between a Genetic Polymorphism in ACTN3 and Elite Sport Performance Among Iranian Soccer Players

Objectives: Polymorphisms in α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) gene are considered to be important in the genetic predisposition to human athletic performance. Most of the activities in soccer such as jumping, striking the ball, and running are considered plyometric and explosive. Performance power during such activities depends on the strength of the muscles involved. Therefore, high muscle strength i...

Acute physical exercise improves shifting in adolescents at school: evidence for a dopaminergic contribution

The executive function of shifting between mental sets demands cognitive flexibility. Based on evidence that physical exercise fostered cognition, we tested whether acute physical exercise can improve shifting in an unselected sample of adolescents. Genetic polymorphisms were analyzed to gain more insight into possibly contributing neurophysiological processes. We examined 297 students aged bet...

Comparison of the Genetic Profile of rs4646994 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism of the ACE Gene in the Elite Male Weightlifters and Non-athletes

Introduction: The ACE gene encodes the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which is characterized by the presence of allele I or the absence of allele D of a 287-bp fragment. The D allele is associated with higher ACE activity and increased angiotensin II levels and performance in strength-oriented exercise tasks. This study aimed to compare the genetic profile of rs4646994 single nucleotide p...
